I know that title might not be the most flattering of statements to make, but it is only meant to grab your attention.

Most parents do their best to give their children the best that they can… but your parents, like most people,  are flawed.  And as they, they probably passed some of their flaws on to you.

Our parents teach us by either being an example of what to do, or by being examples of what not to do.  And once we reach adulthood, it is upon us to determine which models we should follow and which ones are models that we should use as examples of what not to do.

Understand that you are a reflection of your parents and one way or the other they have passed on some ways of behaving or thinking that influence the way that you think and behave today.

Your job now is to take a step back from where you are now, and take an objective,  “third-party” view of who you are, and how you reflect your parents and consciously decide which attributes you want to continue to emulate, and which one you need to rid yourself of.

Once you reach adulthood, your failures are all on you. Take responsibility for any failures that you have experienced and take whatever steps you need to so that you can avoid future re-occurrences of the same mistake.

There are basically two ways to learn.  You can learn from the experience of others, or you can learn from your own experience.  Learning from your own experience is much more expensive ( financially, and emotionally ) than learning from the experience of others who have already paid the price for learning what it is that you want and need to know.  They have failed, gone bankrupt, experienced heartbreak and more…

Now their situation might be somewhat different than your own,, but learn what you can from their experience.   It makes absolutely no sense ( or cents) to pay the price of learning what your parents have already paid for.  If they love you they will share it with you for free  – and take great joy in doing so.

If I knew at your age, what I know now, I would have been a millionaire at 30 and would have been able to retire.  Unfortunately, my parents weren’t able to pass on to me what I now know – this is not an indictment of them, it’s just the fact of the matter.  So what I know, I want to pass on to you as best I can.

Take this lesson and apply it elsewhere as well…  There are people who are doing what you would like to do.  They have failed forward and are now the example of what you aspire to be… Learn from their mistakes.  Read and study them and their experiences.  They have already paid the price…  no reason for you to pay the same price if you have can avoid it.

Love you…
