School fails entrepreneurs. This is a strong statement, so let me start by giving you some context.
School fails entrepreneurs
When we go to school…
We are allowed a minimum grade in order to pass (in most school systems it’s 70%).
This means that if we get more than 30% incorrect…
We fail.
I’m going to be honest with you…
When I was in school, I was NOT the best student.
My grades were about as good as the person sitting next to me.
I barely got through high-school when I joined the U.S. Marine Core.
When I came out of boot camp, I thought I could conquer the world…
I thought I was invincible so I went to college to become a doctor (although I SUCKED in school).
This, obviously, did not go too well.
I failed chemistry and biology…
BADLY. It wasn’t even close…
Figured I would try my luck at economics…
Same result.
I thought, “I’m not really cut out for this” so I did the only thing that was left…
Becoming an entrepreneur.
Why school fails entrepreneurs
When I began my entrepreneurship journey…
I carried the belief and identity as a “failure” with me into business because I failed in school.
School labeled me a failure because I wasn’t great at taking their tests.
So, I’d start a business and I would look at myself and think, “Man! I’m a failure!”.
I got involved in network marketing at the age of 18…
…and I did a BUNCH of presentations but NOBODY signed up. ZERO.
I felt terrible about my results.
Why?
Because I was taught to feel terrible.
What I’ve come to realize over the years however is the opposite.
Most successful entrepreneurs are not successful because they don’t fail.
They are successful because they DO fail…
Are WILLING to fail.
Thank goodness I got exposed to personal development at a young age and was able to re-wire my brain to adopt this way of thinking.
A lesson I learned in high-school that I carry with me still
When I was 15 years old, I got my first job as a newspaper door-to-door salesman.
The way the business incentivized us was through competition…
Whoever sold the most newspapers would win a $ 20 gift-card.
At the time, that was a lot of money to me and I was CRAVING to win.
There was just one problem…
JIMMY!
This kid, Jimmy, was the best salesman.
It seemed as if no matter what I did…
Jimmy would ALWAYS win.
Even though Jimmy would always win…
I began to notice something about him.
Jimmy was a heavy set individual and walks REALLY slow.
I thought to myself, “Even if Jimmy closes more sales than me… I bet I can move much quicker than him, therefore allowing me to talk to more customers and even out the playing field!”
So, that’s exactly what I did.
I SPRINTED to every single door.
Can you guess what happened?
I still lost most of the time…
…BUT sometimes I won.
The lesson?
What you lack in skill, you make up for in numbers
Take a look at baseball:
If you strike out 7 out of 10 times…
You’d be considered one of the best in the world.
You’re going to be a legend if you can consistently only miss 7 out of 10.
The founder of IBM said, “If you want to greatly increase your success, you need to double your rate of failure”.
Double your rate of failure!
This is why school fails entrepreneurs.
Where did you ever learn that it’s EXTREMELY beneficial to fail?
Did they ever tell you how to become successful through your failures?
NO!
At least, not when I was in school.
Some of you are not failing at all!
Why?
Because you’re too scared to do shit!
If you’re not failing AT LEAST once a day…
…and if you’re in network marketing, at least a few times a day…
Then it’s going to be very difficult for you to reach the level of success you’re most likely striving to achieve.
The reality is…
Every failure is a learning lesson
Sometimes I speak on stage or record training videos and look back and think, “Oh my goodness! I said “uh” 57 times, “You know” 30 times and “so” 20!”
Or maybe I tell a joke on stage that doesn’t hit the audience right.
This allows me to understand what DOES NOT work so I can make adjustments.
If you can fail 9 out of 10 times…
You can become incredibly successful.
If you fail 9 out of 10 times…
You can live your dream life and impact the planet in a massive way.
If you’re worried about failure or rejection…
Understand how childish those concerns are.
You’re worried about what people think of you.
Put your ego aside and go forward toward your missing of making an impact regardless of what other people say.
When I haven’t heard anything from a hater in awhile…
That’s when I know I’m doing something wrong!
Listen… School fails entrepreneurs because…
If you’re new in your entrepreneurial career…
Stay driven towards your missiong and your purpose of making an impact of living the life that you truly know that you deserve.
You will have people hating on you and you’ll have a lot of failures.
School fails entrepreneurs because they don’t teach you how to embrace failure… how to embrace people hating on you… and how to properly use it to fuel your success.
They don’t teach you that hate is sometimes a by-product of success.
I’m telling you right now, however, that the haters will pale in comparison to the number of people who celebrate you.
So, in closing:
Be willing to put up with the haters and be willing to put your ego aside.
Stop worrying about looking good and what others say about you.
Go out there and serve your mission of making an impact.

I have a secret to tell you. It’s not always easy to present. Presenting your opportunity is one of the first big hurdles you have to clear. If you want someone to buy into what you’re offering them, it’s needs to be done the right way. What I had to learn was the right way could be different for every prospect but the methods are all very similar.
It is our job as Network Marketers to show people that there is a different way. A better way to live our lives and feel fulfillment at the same time. A certain percentage of people will show interest in the information we present and others won’t. It’s a numbers game.
There are two things we must relay in our message. First, we must let people know that living without a sense of pride and accomplishment is not worth it. Second, they have complete control over their future.
Next time you hear someone talking about:
- Their job is overbearing.
- They have a boss that points fingers and treats every employee like dirt.
- They are underpaid.
- How they wish there is something they could do to improve their life.
Remember that this is your opportunity to invite them to try a different way. A way of life that gives them ambition, control, and potential. A chance that does not depend on the health of mega-businesses, and the unemployment rate. A way of life that is taking over by storm.
If you want to really help people, listen!
Listen to the people that are crying out for help. The people that feel stuck in a rut. More importantly, the people that are obviously unhappy with their current situation and want a change.
If you want to help people, start with the ones that are asking for your ear.
Here are 5 steps to presenting your opportunity:
- Use a method that excites the person. A perfect example is Rise of The Entrepreneur.
- Meet them where they are. Everyone has overcome challenges and everyone has reasons for being where they are right now. Remember, you have to meet that person where they are and then gently guide them back to the path of success.
- Be careful. Our job is NOT to offend. We want to empathize and guide people to a better way.
- Be Ready. Almost every time you present your opportunity, you will be met with an objection. Be ready for it.
- Make sure you remember you journey. You weren’t always a Network Marketer. You weren’t always successful. All of have stories we can tell that will relate to a person with questions. Tell your story.
I want you to see your invitation as a challenge. Turn up your listening skills. Wait for people to complain. When they do, and trust me they will, empathize and guide.
Keep track of how many times this type of conversation occurs over the next 30 days. If you utilize these strategies on only 10% you will be further ahead than 90% of your peers. Good luck and God Speed.
Engage with people who want to stay focused and never lose sight of their goals. The community I have created is one I want you to be a part of. Rejection in business is inevitable. So, how do we best handle rejection in network marketing and use rejection to our advantage?
How to handle rejection in network marketing
If you’re the BEST closer in the world…
You’ll most likely close 1 out of every 3 prospects you present your opportunity to.
What does that mean?
It means you’re going to get rejected twice more than you’re going to get a “yes”.
Even the “best closers in the world” get rejected more often than they get the “yes”.
Now, as you can imagine, most people get rejected more often than every 2 out of 3 people (for some of us it’s more like 1 out of 10… or 1 out of 20!).
Because of this fact…
I want to let you in on a little secret.
A secret as to how to get PAID FOR “NO”.
Ready for it?
Re-wire your brain to handle rejection in network marketing.
Every time you get rejected, I want you to think “Cha-Ching!!!!”.
Let me explain…
Obviously, we get paid – through commission – if somebody says “yes” to our opportunity and purchases our product.
Bear with me here…
If it’s impossible to get every person you show to say “yes”…
Meaning it’s impossible to get a “yes” without a “no”…
…and we get paid for “yes”…
In essence, you’re also getting paid for the “no”!
The only way to get more people to say “yes” – closing more sales – is to get more people to say “no”!
Every “no” moves you closer to a “yes”!
When you adopt this mentality…
You stop trying to avoid rejection and, instead, seek it out!
I understand that rejection hurts!
In fact, one of the biggest reasons why people quit network marketing is because they hate rejection.
That’s why re-wiring your brain to associate getting paid with someone says “no” is not the ONLY strategy to use…
Keep your dreams in front of you to handle rejection in network marketing
Strategy number 2: KEEP YOUR DREAMS IN FRONT OF YOU.
The key to WINNING and having success in life is desire.
How do you get a lot of desire?
You must have dreams.
Dreams are the fuel that fires desire.
Personally, when I was first getting started I had a vision board.
I put pictures of beautiful beaches, places I’d like to travel, my family, and a few other dreams onto a big poster board that I was able to look at every day.
This allowed me to focus on my dream of having the ultimate time & money freedom to travel the world and to do what I wanted whenever I wanted so when the rejection came…
It didn’t deter me.
Envision what you want for your life EVERY day.
Realize that “no” gets you closer to a “yes” and rid yourself of your rejection fears!
Go make it happen!

What makes handling disappointments in network marketing so challenging is
the simple fact that most people don’t expect there to be many disappointments – Especially as it relates to leadership.
The “it’ll be better when…” mentality
So many people, when it comes to network marketing, get involved in network marketing and struggle!
The mindset is always, “It’s going to be better when…” or “It’s going to be amazing when…”.
It reminds me of when I was a kid…
When I was in elementary school, I wanted to go to middle school.
While in middle school, I wanted to go to high school.
Once in high school, I wanted to go to college.
We’re always thinking that somehow it’s going to get better as we progress or as we get older.
If you’ve lived at all…
You understand that’s rarely the case.
The reality of leadership is:
The higher the level of leadership, the more you’ll more skills you’ll need to develop when it comes to handling disappointments in network marketing.
Why?
Because there will be more disappointments!
As you develop large organizations, there are just more things that can go wrong.
There are more people and any time you get a lot of people together…
Crazy drama is likely to ensue.
If I take a look at my career over the course of the last 23 years, building teams that I’ve grown to over a million customers…
I would say the last 9 years have been the best experience I’ve ever had in network marketing.
We’ve intentionally created an amazing culture within’ my organization.
Even though the culture is phenomenal…
There’s still drama and craziness that goes with it.
There are still disappointments.
If you’re not prepared for disappointments, you’re not prepared for leadership
We’ve got to stop expecting everything to be perfect all the time.
Great leaders become great leaders because they become good at disciplining their disappointments and handling challenges.
Instead of wishing there were fewer challenges, be grateful for the challenge.
If there weren’t a lot of challenges, you wouldn’t really be a great leader, would you?
Why?
There isn’t a great leader out there that doesn’t go through challenges.
Look at some of the greatest companies & founders in history:
Steve Jobs,
Uber,
Bill Gates,
They’ve all been through an incredible amount of challenges.
So, first:
Stop expecting there to not be a lot of disappointments.
How do we deal with disappointments in network marketing when they come up?
Let’s say something happens that’s a major disappointment…
Because you’re so disappointed – you hang onto that disappointment and you grieve over that disappointment and you’re so upset about the disappointment and you blame everyone else about your disappointment and you think, “What could I have done differently?”
You beat yourself up because of the disappointment and can’t seem to get out of this funk.
Here’s the key: The more you focus on the disappointment, the longer it hangs around.
The longer it hangs around, the longer your grieving process is.
So, I’m going to give you two key-words that I used to help me overcome going out of business, being $ 750k in debt and losing almost everything…
Ready?
Over & Next.
Here’s the way I look at disappointments: There’s going to be some people who are so disappointed that they’re not going to go after their goals and dreams again.
Why?
Average people don’t experience a ton of disappointments the way great leaders do… so they don’t know how to handle them!
So you have to choose:
Do I want to sacrifice my purpose so that I can live a very average life and not have to experience these disappointments?
Of course not!
The key-words “over” & “next” help to remind me to move forward and put the past behind me.
If you’ve got something going on in your business and you’ve been dwelling on the negative…
You’ve got to do everything in your power to say, “You know what? That is over. Next! We’ve got to move on. Great leaders move on.”
Otherwise, you’re never going to rise to your potential.
When handling disappointments in network marketing, realize…
If you’re focused on disappointments, you’ll never reach your fullest potential.
Part of my mission in life is to continually rise to the highest level of potential that God has for me.
I understand that if I’m dwelling on the disappointments…
If I’m losing sleep over disappointments…
Or if I’m crying over disappointments…
I will never get to rise to that potential and live up to the rest of the purpose that I have for my life.
So say to yourself, “over & next”.
Move on, move forward, and make it happen.

I was asked recently, “If there was one word that encompassed the secret to success, what would it be?”
In order to determine the ‘all-encompassing’ secret to success word… let’s go back in time a little bit.
I got in network marketing at the age of 18 years old…
A young waitress sponsored me (The only reason I signed up was because I thought I had a chance with her…) and handed me my first personal development book.
It was “Think & Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill.
At the beginning of the book, it said something like, “within’ this book lies the secret to success.”.
Side note – If you haven’t read Think & Grow Rich… Go get it! Napoleon Hill went out and interviewed basically 400 of the wealthiest people, top influencers, and top thought leaders.
I was really excited to dive into this goldmine of wisdom and discover the secret to success!
Why?
Mainly it was because it had “rich” in the title and I wanted to be rich!
I’ve been in school my whole life and not once did somebody teach me the secret to success.
So, I read the entire book front-to-back and guess what…
I must have missed where it told me the secret!
So, I read the entire book a second time…
Specifically searching for the word “Secret”… and it never showed up!
I thought to myself, “maybe he’s lying!”.
Finally, I decided to read it a third time.
This time I read it with the intention of figuring out for myself what the secret was.
I searched diligently for what the common denominator of all these successful leaders was.
Most everybody went through some type of adversity & was met with many challenges before achieving success.
What I noticed was that ONE word showed up more than any other word in the book…
I determined that, that ONE word had to be the secret!
If I can have this one thing, as all these other leaders have had, I could have success!
It wasn’t intelligence, it wasn’t a born quality, and it wasn’t anything external.
The one word is determination.
Simply having the will to continue going until you win.
This gave me extreme hope because I didn’t have any advantages growing up…
I didn’t grow up wealthy…
Never did well in school…
Didn’t feel smart…
…but when I read the book that third time I said, “If the secret to success is determination… If I’m willing to have pig-headed determination and if I’ll just keep going until I win… I’ll just win!”.
Realize – If you have more determination than anyone else, you will have massive success because in reality in life (and business) is that most people quit before the prize.
Most people lack determination and that’s why they fail
That’s why they live an average life.
It’s why they finish their life looking back, filled with regret because they just simply didn’t have enough determination.
Now, they won’t blame it on not having determination…
They’ll blame it on life not being fair…
Not having the right resources…
Or not being smart enough…
…but in reality, the only reason why you fail is that you don’t have enough determination.
I remember the first time I had success in network marketing… I built a team of ten thousand people in a startup company and that company went out of business…
There were a lot of people who were way more talented than me…
They were way better speakers than me…
Better salespeople than me…
They had way more credibility…
And much older than me.
Guess what happened when the company went out of business?
They went back to the corporate world.
Why?
They didn’t have the secret to success!
Determination.
Today most of them are living about the same life that they were years ago.
I, however, had the determination that I am going to win in life.
“I’ll get rich and become a millionaire.”.
And so I just continued.
I look at over the last nine years in my company, I mean I was just looking this morning and I’m looking at my weekly income…
It’s up anywhere from four to six times what it was earlier in the year. Four to six times because I’ve just decided. I said, “you know what? This year, what I’m going to do is I’m going to take out the brake pedal. I’m going to put another accelerator and I’m going to mash both feet straight down and I’m going to go win. I don’t care what challenges come up!”.
Even though the challenges came up – my income is up four to six times.
Why?
I’ve got determination.
Other people are going to quit.
I have determination.
I’ve got long-term vision.
I’m gonna go build a damn dynasty.
In order to build a dynasty, you gotta have determination. Pig headed determination.
So my friends if you want to lock in one character trait in yourself that’s going to cause you to win even when you don’t feel like you have any advantages – lock-in determination.
Lock in determination
Say it to yourself over and over again.
Do whatever it takes, no matter how much you have to struggle…
You’ve got to have the determination and the will to win.
You will win if you have the attitude and belief.

It’s simple to become a leader in network marketing once you understand how simple
and how easy leadership is.
The first step in knowing how to become a great leader in network marketing is knowing what great leaders DON’T do.
I was on a call with a VERY strong leader on my team…
…but he said something that I find is one of the reasons why a lot of leaders don’t rise up to the potential that they have within’ them.
If you want to be a bad leader…
You should say things and act in a manner that is not consistent with the greatest leader that you want to be.
What man bad ‘leaders’ will say things like, “Once I achieve a certain level of leadership…
Once I achieve a certain level of income or rank, THEN I will be a great leader and then act like that great leader.”
This, obviously, is not the way to becoming a leader.
So, the leader on my team said, “Well, I’m not like you!”.
Whenever you say something like “Well, I’m not like you”, you’re saying that you’re not as good as someone else.
You’re always going to be second best…
Second best thinkers are always second-best doers.
As long as you keep saying, “I’m not an expert”, you’re never going to be the expert!
A leader in network marketing acts as if…
You’ve got to act as if you already are the greatest leader of all time.
Stop saying things that a top leader in your company would not say.
Sounds fairly simple, right?
If you take the top leader in your company – the person that you aspire to be like – look a the things they say.
Study their mannerisms…
Their vocabulary and speech patterns…
Take all of this and simply to do things that leader would do.
I remember when I was new and had a team that grew to a few hundred people.
My mentor pulled me aside and said, “You’re a leader when you decide to be. You’re a leader when you act like a leader.”
Such a simple statement was so profound for me at the time, however, it didn’t truly click for me until putting my buddy and me through a demonstration…
Leaders lead… right?
My buddy and I were standing next to each other asking my mentor more about leadership…
He moved his head (in a “follow me” fashion) and started walking around the car.
My buddy and I started walking around the car where he was.
We walked all the way around the car and then we stopped.
My mentor asked, “what just happened?”.
He led…
We followed.
That’s what great leaders do.
What are the greatest things that a leader would do?
Ask yourself…
“What would an incredible leader do?”
I asked myself this question and came to the conclusion: Great leaders would do a weekly leadership call every Monday night!
So, I read books and studied leadership.
I’d read John Maxwell books, network marketing books and anything I could get my hands on!
I took notes profusely!
Guess what I talked about on our leadership calls?
I just read my notes!
Literally, I would read my notes from what I had read and learned and would spit the information out to my group.
An interesting thing started to happen…
I suddenly had so many people saying, “Oh my God, Matt! You’re this amazing leader. I can’t believe the information that you give us. I can’t believe the mentorship that you give us!”.
This was the “holy shit!” moment…
People want to follow others…
You will only lead others if people perceive you to be at a higher level leader than themselves.
Notice the keyword: Perceive.
If you act like a leader, people will perceive you as a leader that they want to follow.
It’s as simple as that…
Leadership is incredibly simple once you understand how simple and easy leadership really is.
Everyone thinks leadership is so hard when in reality, asll you have to do is the things that a leader would do.
If you feel unconfident…
Do the thing anyway! Nobody knows that you’re unconfident.
If you’re scared…
Do the thing you’re scared of! Nobody knows you’re scared except for you.
If you’re fearful…
Do the thing that you’re afraid of over and over again.
Why?
The more you do it, the more the fear goes away.
Eventually, you will become confident inside, you won’t feel the knots in your stomach, and you’ll rise to the level internally that you ultimately want to be.
You’ll feel like the leader you’ve always wanted to be.

Recently I was asked, “How do you overcome objections in network marketing?
Specifically, the “I’ll join when I’ve seen you’ve had success” objection.
How to overcome objections in network marketing
Specifically, how do we overcome the objection: “I’ll join when I’ve seen you’ve had success.”.
A couple of things:
First – Someone who says something like that is NOT the person that I want to work with.
You see, when most people are new to network marketing, they have kind of a needy mentality…
…they feel like they need people to join their organization regardless of WHO joins.
I always joke about when I first got started…
There was a little compact mirror that I brought with me EVERYWHERE I went…
I’d put that mirror up to someone’s nose and if they would fog it up then I would show them!
Did I really do this?
Of course not! (Not for very long, at least. People started to get weirded out…)
I tell this story to prove a point:
You should show just about everyone…
Whether you think they’re going to join or not. You can’t prejudge.
One of the reasons I struggled so long is because I tried to read people’s minds…
Determine if they were going to build a business or not.
This inhibited me from approaching people that could have brought in a ton of business.
So, show everyone!
BUT…
While you have the mentality of showing everyone…
You want to have an abundance mindset.
You want to realize there are A LOT of people.
The way I look at building my organization is this:
I’m the CEO of my own business.
As CEO, I am not looking for low-level employees…
I’m looking for high-level people.
For presidents…
Vice presidents…
I’m looking for my generals!
Is it even necessary to overcome this objection?
If someone is going to give me crazy objections…
I don’t need them on my team.
Why?
Because there are millions of people out there to prospect.
When you have a scarcity mindset, you feel like you’ve got to close these people…
Like you’ve got to close everyone you’re in front of.
I don’t care how good you are, you’re never going to close everyone you get in front of.
Approach every situation with the perspective that if someone is coachable and teachable…
If they lock arms with me, I can change their life forever.
I can change the life of their grandchildren and their financial destiny for their family!
With this perspective – I approach every encounter as not being need.
If they’re not willing to help themselves then I’m going to politely move on to someone else.
Be confident but never arrogant.
If you choose to overcome this objection:
Typically if you’re getting that objection, you don’t have enough certainty.
I’ll tell you this:
The reason why people largely don’t have credibility with their prospects is usually that you don’t believe they have enough credibility.
They’re not showing up with enough certainty that transmits a feeling of leadership or power that you are going to win with this.
If you want to bump up your certainty and level of leadership…
You may want to bump up your confidence.
The more you bump that up, the less you will get that objection.
So, enough on mindset – let’s get into some tactics of overcoming this objection in network marketing
First, you can overcome objections in network marketing by bringing them to someone in your up-line, someone else who is making money.
Someone who has the credibility you’re looking for…
Second, If you want some words to say, you can smile and say something like:
“Dude, that’s like saying you’re gonna go to the gym once you see that I get in shape. Obviously you don’t join a gym and get in shape in a week. It takes some time to get in shape. And if you wait for the next six months or a year before I’m in amazing shape, you’re gonna be six months or a year behind me. So that objection doesn’t make any sense my friend. Are you ready to get started?”
Close early and close often.
Here’s what I mean by close early: When a presentation is over…
Don’t go into sales mode.
The business should be amazingly simple and when your presentation is over…
GO FOR THE ASK!
Ask if they’re ready to partner up with you.
If you go through the presentation and do another 10-15 minutes of salesmanship, they think they have to do the exact same thing.
So simply, finish the information & close the sale.
Now, they give you an objection…
Them: “I’ll join when you’re making money.”
You: Dude that doesn’t make any sense. That’s like saying that you’re gonna get in shape after I’ve gotten in shape. You know you don’t join a gym and then have six-pack abs in a week. It takes a while to develop that, right? Just like any business. And so if you wait six months or a year you’re gonna be six months or a year behind me. So my suggestion is let’s get in shape together, let’s start making money together and let’s go build a big business. You’re ready to get started?
Handle the objection then close again.
Don’t get psychologically tied to this one person and their objection…
That will cost you your success.
Go make it happen.

Discipline is the most important factor to success, right? I’m not convinced. I believe there to be a much more effective route towards success that allows you to succeed without discipline.
Is discipline necessary for success?
Let’s talk today about how to succeed without discipline.
Do you need discipline in your life?
Absolutely!
Will discipline work long-term?
No.
Let me explain:
I’ve traveled to over 80 countries, spoke to audiences in 35 different countries around the world.
Having the capacity to do those things I definitely needed to have discipline, however, I believe there is something much powerful than discipline.
You see – discipline is short term.
It was hard for me to come to this realization because I am a marine…
I spent six years in the US Marine Corps and boot camp.
Discipline was ingrained into our minds.
When doing push-ups – down was discipline, up was integrity.
Coming out of the Marine Corps NOTHING could stop me. I had the mentality to outwork everyone & I genuinely believed I couldn’t lose!
(I still did lose… a lot).
The same mentality was applied to my fitness.
I’ve stayed in great shape most of my life, however, I never had six-pack abs up until a few years ago.
So, I told myself I was going to get six-pack abs and that I was going to get them with extreme discipline!
The following 90 days, I busted my ass like crazy.
Perfect eating…
No cheat meals (my trainer didn’t believe in cheat meals)…
No alcohol…
And I was like, “YEAH! I’m so disciplined!”
Can you guess what happened?
The discipline was not worth it!
I was relying on discipline and not the love of the game.
Not the love of being in shape.
A few months later, I lost my six-pack abs.
I came to the realization that…
Discipline is not enough…
You’ve got to change your mindset.
This is how you succeed without discipline.
I made the decision that I was going to get my six-pack abs back and I was going to be discipline for a time…
…but I was going to do something that was going to be sustainable long-term.
Something that was going to allow me to love my lifestyle and eating regimen.
So, I decided to have cheat meals…
Drinking (very small amounts) if I was out with my buddies…
I decided to do something that was sustainable long-term and wasn’t going to kill me.
Discipline was necessary at the beginning to help with the next thing that I did…
Change your programming
It took a couple of months of discipline but what happened was that I started changing my vocabulary.
I started saying, “I’m addicted to working out. I love working out!”.
When I did the 90-day intensive program, I would tell myself, “I hate cardio, but I’m going to do it because I’m freaking disciplined!”
Because I didn’t fall in love with cardio…
I stopped.
As soon as I hit my goal, it was done.
I began telling myself, “I love cardio”.
Most people would tell me things like, “you’ve got to tell yourself the truth! If you hate cardio… tell yourself you hate cardio and just do it anyway.”
I call bullshit.
The truth is what you freaking make up.
Truth is whatever your programming has been for your life. That’s what you decide the truth is.
If you believe you can’t “succeed without discipline” then you won’t succeed without discipline.
It’s kind of like, “I hate mornings!”
That’s only true because you make it true. You hate mornings because you don’t have the discipline to get to bed on time.
You hate mornings because you’ve programmed yourself your whole life that you hate mornings.
If you want to change your truth…
You’ve got to change your programming.
Ask yourself – “What do I love more?”
I started to love being at 10% body fat more than eating chocolate cake.
The feelings I got when looking in the mirror were more enjoyable than my love of empty carbs!
I love telling myself that I’m a peak performance athlete (even though I’m not compared to others).
Discipline got me started…
…but the reason I have six-pack abs two years later after I made that decision is because of HABITS.
I don’t need the discipline anymore because I have a habit of eating right…
Of working out every day…
Doing cardio most days of the week.
Guess what?
I love it! I love the fact that I’m more concerned with my health than I am eating a bunch of desserts (even though I still love some chocolate cake every now and again).
How does this apply to business?
Maybe you need to make 10 or 20 sales calls a day and you don’t want to make them because you’ve been programmed that you hate the phone or hate rejection.
What do you need to do
Become discipline for a short period of time.
You’ve got to have the will to go make the 20 calls/day.
While you’re doing this…
Re-program your mind.
Tell yourself that you love making calls, new connections, and new friends.
Fall in love with rejection because you understand that you’re that much closer to a yes.
Life is what you make it. It can be an amazing game and a lot of fun…
or…
It can be miserable and you’re going to have to sludge through life.
Sludge through making sales calls.
If you don’t want that for yourself then have the discipline to change your narrative.
Do the work for long enough until you develop the habit and you fall in love with the process.
The two keys to success in life:
Consistency and love of the game.
The reason you’ll be consistent with something is if you fall in love with it.
How do you fall in love with something?
You program yourself to fall in love with something. You look at the benefits of things versus the negative things.
What are the joys of doing the things you need to do versus what are the things that hold you back from doing the things you need to do?
I realized that I love being wealthy way more than I hate rejection.
I’m in love with what money will do for me.
I love being able to travel the world, make an impact on the lives of other people (especially in network marketing) and guess what…?
There is no way you can make a positive impact on the lives of many people unless you’re willing to go through a lot of rejection and failure.
Yes, you need discipline in the short term, however, once you’ve developed sustainable habits you find that you can continue to succeed without discipline.
Go make it happen.
