Creating Momentum In Network Marketing | Part I

Creating momentum in network marketing

Creating momentum in network marketing is every networker’s dream…

That magical phase of momentum when exponential growth kicks in…
When duplication goes crazy and you feel unstoppable.
Incomes multiply many times over.
It makes leaders appear way better than they actually are which is where the danger can kick in…
Ego’s sometimes inflating rapidly.
Leaders feel like they’re suddenly God’s gift to network marketing.
The high of the growth has you feeling like it’s going to last forever…
In my 24 years, I’ve experienced this magical phase of momentum many many times.
I’ve gone from completely broke to $ 10,000 per week in 6 months.
Nothing to 20,000 in my organization in a couple years.
I’ve seen my team go from a few thousand, struggling and at a plateau… to explode to hundreds of thousands all over the world producing many millionaires.
I’ve cycled through having it all to losing it all (repeat)…
It’s enough to make you bipolar 😉
I know many network marketing leaders would try to have you believe that it’s all rainbows and flowers shooting out of your a$ $
But I’m guessing you want the truth.
So you’re not going to get a lot of sugar-coating from me.
I want you to be a professional…
Your team to be professionals.
When in my first 2 years of Amway…
I didn’t make any money…
…but I loved that the leaders didn’t sugar coat what it really took to create success.
They weren’t afraid of telling you how hard you really have to work.
And neither am I.
When I met my mentor at age 24, he was no different. He didn’t sugar coat it for me… and I won’t with you.
I’m going to give you what I’ve discovered to be the laws for creating momentum in network marketing.
I’ll give you the first 2 laws in this post.

Creating Momentum In Network Marketing Law 1: Personal Momentum Preceds Group Momentum

This correlates with my 5 Levels of Leadership which I’ll turn into a book later this year.
The 2nd level of leadership is becoming a producer. i.e. personal production.
If you haven’t mastered personal production, you will not be able to teach it to your team.
Until you’ve mastered personal production, you’ll only be able to teach your team based on theory.
So what makes a producer?
30 is the minimum.
Why 30?
Well, I don’t know exactly… it’ what my mentor told me and what I’ve found to be true over the years. He said if you go out and sponsor 30 the right way (major key there) it will turn into thousands.
Disclaimer Alert – I make no guarantee’s – it’s just what he told me 20 years ago.
Here’s what you need to know…
If haven’t personally sponsored at least 30 people, you’re not yet a real producer
I’m sure I’ve hurt a lot of feelings over the years but the truth is the truth.
You can’t build an army of producers if you’re not one yourself.
If you want group momentum, that happens AFTER personal momentum.
This brings me to law number 2…

Creating Momentum in Network Marketing Law #2: The Law Of
Compressed Activity

This law states that the results you create in a compressed amount of time will pay you way more money long term than the same amount of effort put in over an extended period of time.
So… Enrolling 10 people in 30 days will pay you way more money over the course of the next few years compared to enrolling 10 people over the course of 10 months.
Why?
It may be the most cliché quote in our profession because it’s so true:
“The speed of the team is determined by the speed of the leader.”
If you’re enrolling 1 person a month, there’s nothing wrong with that… you can eventually find a leader that way. But it’s going to be a slow process.
Because you produce at 1 a month, you set the belief for your team at 1.
This is a BIG lesson…
Your engaged team typically does about 20%-30% of what you do as a leader. So if you do 1 a month, most of your team will likely do none and your real go-getters will do 1.
If you’re enrolling 5 people a month, you set the belief for your team at 5. So if you’re doing 5 a month, your engaged team will likely do 1 or 2 a month and your real go-getters 4 or 5. Much better numbers.
As always, there are no guarantees – this is just my experience over 20+ years and leading an organization that’s grown to over 1 million customers.
I’ll sum up today’s law with some deep philosophy…

How to achieve full-time income in network marketing…

Recently, I got a message from a guy on in my organization asking how to achieve a full-time income in network marketing.

I’ve got a couple of different answers to this…

The first is pretty simple…

Personally enroll as many as it takes. 

The bottom line: as many as it takes.

After 24+ years of experience being involved in network marketing and building that equal over one million active customers, I’ve heard a lot of strategies.

My personal favor (sarcasm) is the “I’m going to enroll 5, that enroll 5, that enroll 5 and I’m going to enroll anyone else until I’ve helped them get 5.” or the “I’m going to give away my personals so my downline will stick around” bullsh*t.

That’s a welfare mentality.

Personally, I think that’s a broken system.

If you give enrollments away and constantly building people’s team…

They have NO incentive to build it themselves.

In theory…

It makes sense…

But you don’t gain mastery in network marketing with theory.

You gain mastery and a full-time income in network marketing by doing the work…

Not philosophizing and reading books about it.

The reality when trying to achieve full-time income in network marketing

You’ve got to go personally produce and put in enough people to find LEADERS!

Network marketing is a sorting business…

You have to sort through some chickens (people who don’t produce) before you find an eagle.

Don’t think I’m talking negatively about anyone…

It took me 5 years to get to a full-time income…

I was a chicken myself!

The only eagle-like quality I had was that I attended all the training and events.

You’re an eagle in training (;

Now, let me tell you something my mentor told me…

The fastest path to earning a full-time income in network marketing…

Simply to recruit 30 people fast (no, I’m not guaranteeing that).

For me, after my 5-year struggle…

I finally made the decision to make sh*t happen and recruited 30 people into my organization in 30 days.

Now, I’m not saying that you have to do that (In fact, I don’t believe I’ve ever recruited that many people in 30 days again…)

But those 30 turned into thousands!

I got to a six-figure income.

Sometimes you have to enroll 29 chickens in order to get one eagle.

If you’re serious about going full-time in network marketing…

Shoot for enrolling 30 people.

The faster, the better.

See, there’s a thing called…

Using the Law Of Compressed Activity to reach a full-time income in network marketing

Good! You’re well on your way.

If not…

You’ve got some work to do.

Bottom line: you’ve got to personally produce.

Making $ 10,000 per month online seems to be the magical number that most people want to strive for when starting an online business.

Many will say it’s hard to get started with and hard to keep doing right.

You will need your vision of what you work to carry you through the rest of the steps when they get challenging.

Your vision is what keeps you going when the next nine steps are difficult. The less your vision depends on you and the more your participation is part of working for a collective cause, the better chance you will have to succeed and grow quickly.

Begin with a vision of what you want to work for that is bigger than you.

If you want to grow, you need a little bit of growth all the time rather than instantly scalable systems.  This means you need a system that always works and continues to work a little bit better rather than a system you think you can immediately take from $ 1,000/month to $ 10,000/month.

What you want to do is consistently grow a little bit each month.  This means go from $ 1,000 per month to $ 1,200 per month to $ 1,500/month to $ 2,000 per month.  When you take one step at a time, managing your growth is much easier.

I went from struggling to make a few thousand per month to making over $ 10,000 leveraging Facebook.

I don’t care what your rank in your company is.

It doesn’t matter how much money you make.

The bottom line…

YOU ARE A LEADER! 

The most widely accepted definition of leadership boils down to one word…

Influence

Leadership is influence over other people.

If you have just one person in your organization…

You are a leader because you’re influencing the other person in your organization.

Knowing this…

Step up and become the leader in your organization and stop waiting for sh*t to happen!

I’ve got a little bit of an advantage of having built an organization of well over a million customers in the last nine years.

And in 20 years…

The biggest thing I see that holds people back is that…

They don’t believe they are a leader or don’t see themselves as someone who could become a leader.

It’s not uncommon for these people to think they can get away with bad behavior (not showing up or personally producing themselves).

It doesn’t matter if you have a massive organization or a small group…

You still have influence over other people and they will be looking at YOU to determine how big or small their actions should be.

Everything that you do duplicates.

So, if you’re not personally producing…

Those in your organization most likely aren’t producing either.

One of the reasons I’m personally enrolling, mentoring and building new people up and helping create financial freedom for them is because I understand that top leaders in my organization will see this behavior and duplicate it!

If they see me in retirement mode and not personally producing at a high level then guess what…

They won’t do sh*t!

You are the leader

Realize that you ARE the leader…

You just need to decide to become the leader in your organization that you already are.

After a meeting…

Are you going out and getting drunk?

If so – other people see that.

That duplicates.

You’ve got to be watching yourself and realize that everything you do duplicates.

Someone will always be watching…

The good news?

Good behavior duplicates too.

Ask yourself this question:

“If everyone in your organization produced personally at the level you are personally producing…
would you be excited?”

If not…

Make a change.

Step up and become the leader.

Recruit more in network marketing

To recruit more in network marketing we must focus on planting more seeds.

Recruit more in network marketing by planting more seeds…

Recently I was flying from Hong Kong to Kenya for a training event.

I had downloaded Jim Rohn’s, “Building Your Network Marketing Business” (If you haven’t downloaded this yet… do it! It’s an incredible product).

In the audio Jim talks about being a “Sower of seeds”. 

Essentially becoming a farmer of sorts.

Let me explain…

When we go out and we show our business to people…

What we’re really doing is sowing seeds…planting seeds.

Jim gives this analogy:

Network marketing is kind of like planting seeds.”

The analogy continues…

Sometimes when you plant the seeds in the garden…

Birds come along and eat the seeds.

The birds get them.

You want to recruit more in network marketing but the birds eat your seeds

You invite someone to see your opportunity…

Maybe for coffee or a business briefing…

…and they don’t show up or call you.

You’re wondering, “What happened to Mary?”. 

Mary said she was coming but never showed up.

I’ll tell you what happened to Mary…

The birds got her. 

Somebody (or even her own thoughts) got to her first and told her it wasn’t a good idea.

We can philosophize this all day long (trying to figure out why people do what they do)…

…but personally (like Jim Rohn says), I wouldn’t waste too much time on it. It’s human nature. Sometimes when you plant seeds…

Other people will get to them first and there isn’t much you can do about it. Oh well. Next.

Sometimes your seeds land on the rocky ground…

When a seed is planted on the rocky ground…

The seed will sprout but it won’t sprout very high.

A hot day comes around and the sprout withers and dies.

So, sometimes you enroll somebody and they’re extremely excited!

What happens, however, is it starts to get tough and they quit.

Your new recruit said he was going to make you rich. What happened?

John (your new recruit) landed on rocky ground.

Sometimes your seeds land on thorns…

When you’re planting seeds…

Sometimes your seeds will land on thorns.

So, you’ll have people join y our organization and they’ll actually go out and enroll some other people.

They’ll have a bit of success.

You think, “Wow, this person is going to go all the way! I finally got one!”. 

What happens next?

Someone will get their feelings hurt.

One of the biggest reasons people quit network marketing is that they get their feelings hurt.

They show someone the business and that person says, “I can’t believe you got scammed!”.

Then they quit.

All you need to know is that the thorns got them.

Sometimes the birds get them… sometimes the thorns get them… sometimes your seeds land on shallow ground.

At times the seeds will produce 30%.

Other times they produce 60%…

…but sometimes they produce 100%.

Some seeds (producers in your organization) will produce more than others.

You can try and figure out why…

But I wouldn’t waste my time on it.

Realize…

If you plant enough seeds…

They’ll eventually land on fertile soil.

You may get frustrated with the birds, the thorns, and the rocky ground…

…but if you just keep planting, my friend…

You’ll eventually have an incredible harvest.

Go out and plant more seeds and recruit more in your network marketing business.

How to Motivate Your Team In Network Marketing

How do you motivate your team in network marketing? Do you motivate or do you replace?

Motivate your team in network marketing by first “motivating” yourself

“There’s no such thing as unmotivated people. There are only people with impotent goals.” – Anthony Robbins

John Maxwell is a little more eloquent when he says, “If you don’t want much, you won’t be motivated to do much.” 

Both are 100% correct.

If you are going to motivate your team…

You must ensure that YOU are first motivating yourself.

A book you should read, especially if you’re in network marketing, is “All You Can Do Is All You Can Do” by Art Williams.

Art built the largest privately held term life insurance company in the world using a network marketing model.

He knows a thing or two about motivation.

In his book, he gives what he believes the key to winning.

The key? DESIRE.

Those who win simply want it more than those who don’t win.

All the winners I know have an insatiable desire to succeed and something that burns inside their gut!

So, if the key to winning is desire, what’s the key to desire?

The key to desire: A pre-requisite needed to motivate your team in network marketing

“Dreams are the fuel that fire desire.” – Art Williams

It’s dreams that are the fuel that drives you to do the work.

Dreams are the fuel that allows you to face your fears, overcome massive rejection, and keep you going when you’ve been knocked on your ass over and over.

If you don’t naturally have this insane level of desire and if you don’t have these dreams that run through your head regularly, remember this…

You must be Disciplined in creating your desire!

If you’re not motivated, don’t have dreams (written out) and aren’t disciplined…

Then do the following steps below BEFORE you read the second part of this blog that answers the question: “do you motivate your team or do you find people who are already motivated?”

Action steps to find your desire…

Create your BUCKET LIST – at least 100 things you want to be, do, have and give.

Prioritize the top dreams and make sure you look at them regularly, ideally daily.

Once you’ve done this…

Continue reading.

Do you motivate your team in network marketing or replace them?

Ideally, you would do both…

However…

If I had to choose one, it would definitely be to find people who are already motivated and have them become a part of your team.

I’ve realized it’s much easier to find people who are motivated than to motivate the unmotivated.

The people who are unmotivated…

There is a reason they’re unmotivated.

It’s highly unlikely that these types of individuals will ever produce at a high level.

You want to find people who already have the hunger and desire and are looking to kick it up a few notches.

With unmotivated people…

You’ll always have to babysit them.

Think of somebody in your life that you look up to. Someone that always seems to know the answer, take initiative and produces results.

That’s the type of person you want to go after when recruiting in network marketing.

How do you attract this type of person?

Become the person that THEY would follow.

How to motivate your team in network marketing

Now, a leader’s job (which you are if you’re reading this) is to get your team to take action.

Even those of us with an extreme desire still need some motivation every now and again.

There are 2 ways to ensure motivation is high within’ your organization and your team consistently take action:

  1. Get your team to events.

There is nothing more powerful than attending an event with 1000’s of other people who believe what you believe, are JUICED with excitement and not to mention…

A lot of the people who attend the events already have exactly what you’re looking for.

Events show you what’s possible.

2. Have a weekly coaching call

If you’re not currently doing a weekly coaching call…

Start this week.

Don’t do 1-on-1 coaching with people on your team as this takes up way too much time.

Get your top leaders and schedule a time every week to talk about how to move the needle in your business forward.

Action Items:

If you haven’t made your list of 100 goals…

Do it. NOW!

Next, get your top leaders together and agree on a weekly meeting to discuss how to improve what you’re currently doing and bounce ideas off each other.

Lastly, get everyone on your team to a live event.

Boom! Hope this helps.

Why a morning routine is important!

A notorious insomniac but a dedicated public servant, Emperor Marcus Aurelius wrote:

“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: ‘I have to go to work – as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for – the things which I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?” 

Of course, no matter how much we love our life or enjoy what we do…

Getting out of bed can still be tough for most of us.

As a Stoic, Marcus suggested one remedy for getting over this hurdle: Discipline.

You can have all the discipline you want, but if you don’t handle the first hour or so after you get out of bed…

You’ll be fighting an uphill battle all day long.

I’ve got news for you…

Tough mornings are not tough because of insufficient willpower…

…but because nobody teaches us how to make them easy and how to build this momentum.

Do you press snooze 5 times before finally getting up or scroll through social media?

Is there a purpose in your actions?

Only one in seven people report feeling refreshed after sleeping.

Almost half of all Americans report feeling fatigued or lousy at least three times during the week.

The solution?

Taking control of your morning.

Have you ever had a morning where you’re not rushed and feel a step ahead of everything and everyone?

What if you can create a system that breeds that same result every time?

When you’re able to hydrate, set your intention, warm-up your body, meditate and fill yourself up with gratitude…

The rest of your day is lived with passion, purpose, and vitality.

So… Let’s take a look at my morning routine and exactly why I do each task &how it can benefit you.

My Ultimate Morning Routine

I wake up at 5:30 or 6:30 (depending on whether the kids have school or not)…

Ensuring that I have at least an hour to myself.

Immediately upon waking I chug 1/2 liter of water. 

WHY?

You go 6-8 hours without drinking anything which can dehydrate you.

There are studies on both men and women showing that even mild dehydrating resulting from fluid loss equaling roughly 1% of your body weight can cause headaches, moodiness, irritability, anxiety, and fatigue.

A decrease in mental performance and short-term memory loss can start at as little as a 2% loss in water.

When 78% of Americans are chronically dehydrated, based on their water intake, that does not paint a pretty picture of the start of an average day…

So lubricate all those critical internal functions of your body and get them fired and ready to work by starting your day with drinking water.

Next step in my morning routine: The Core 4

I got this concept from Garrett White.

The idea is to make progress in each one of these categories:

Body – Being – Balance – Business

Business:

As I’m drinking my coffee (AFTER I’ve already hydrated with water), I listen to a business podcast or read something that will sharpen my skills as an entrepreneur.

After I’ve done this for 10-12 minutes, I pull open Evernote and I write down a business declaration – something I plan to implement in my business or something I just learned that I can apply.

Being: 

Upon completing my business declaration, I grab my Muse headset and meditate for 10 minutes.

I struggled for years with not meditating consistently.

Muse gave me a huge breakthrough earlier this year because the Muse headband measures your brainwaves and gives you a report afterward letting you know how much you spend in a calm state Vs. neutral state Vs. active state.

I love having feedback afterward to know how effective the meditation has been.

With the feedback, you’re also able to track the techniques that actually work so when you’re in a stressful situation at work, with family, or wherever…

You’re able to use that technique to IMMEDIATELY put your body/mind into a relaxed mode where you’re able to think clearly.

Body

Next, I do a 12-minute Tabata workout to work up a sweat (If I’m not going to the gym) or I stretch for that time.

Of everything included in my morning routine…

This is by far the most difficult for people.

The urge to crawl under the blankets and slam the SNOOZE button like whack-a-mole is almost irresistible. That’s why the key to overcoming that resistance is getting movement into your body.

Even light movement will increase core temperature, cortisol, circulation, and the release of endorphins that will make you more alert, and put the grogginess behind you.

It doesn’t matter how you get your movement in…

JUST GET IT IN!  

Next, I drink a super greens drink.

I’ve tried a bunch of different brands but most of them either

  1. Taste TERRIBLE
    or
  2. I don’t notice a difference in how they make me feel

Balance

Next, I send 2 messages to connect with someone in my life.

Usually, it’s gratitude but sometimes it’s just to connect and strengthen the relationship.

I tend to send one to Devon (my girlfriend) every day because there always seems to be something about her I find to be grateful for.

Recently, I’ve started writing quick notes to my children on a colorful sticky note.

What I’ve discovered to be the key to this morning routine

The night before…

It’s crucial that you plan what you’re going to execute on for the day.

Personally, I tend to rank the action items in order of importance so I’m getting the most important thing done first.

As John Maxwell would say, “eat the frog first”.

Once I’ve finished my morning routine, I like not having to think about what I need to get done.

When I have it already listed out and prioritized I can just simply execute and be productive.

If you haven’t tried staying consistent with a morning routine, I’d definitely suggest putting something like this in place.
