Without traffic from people actively SHOPPING and SEARCHING for whatever it is you are promoting, you will never make a dime.

You can have the exact same web site as I, selling the same exact product, service, or home business opportunity but if you don’t get traffic to your web site you will not make a dime.

Just because you build it DOES NOT mean people will come.

This is exactly why most people never really get off the ground with internet marketing. Most newbie internet marketers don’t understand and forget the marketing part of the equation.

There are three primary ways to build a profitable business using the internet:

  • Network Marketing –  where you promote a business opportunity and sell products and services
  • Affiliate Marketing – where you sell other people’s products, services

The basic premise of increasing your income and profitability boils down to how well you can

1) increase the number of new buyers,

2) increase the dollar amount of all sales, and

3) increase the number of times a customer buys from you.

Promoting your own products makes sense if you have the time, talent, and expertise to pull this off because you stand to make 100% of the revenue ( minus taxes ) generated by all the sales generated which is significantly higher than the commissions paid by most affiliate programs.

If you are new online, this is probably the hardest route to take to get profitable fast.  It can be done, but there are a lot of moving parts and as a newbie, it’s easy to get confused and overwhelmed by all of the things that you will have to learn to make this business model work.

If you’ve ever heard of eBay or Amazon, you have some idea as to how big a deal eCommerce is.  As the traditional retail market continues to shrink, eCommerce is growing exponentially and this is one way that almost anyone with a computer and about 3 hours a day can supplement or totally replace their 9-5 income.  When you are just starting in eCommerce, I recommend that (unless you have a huge budget to start with, I recommend starting with dropshipping.

Network Marketing

MLM is a business model that pays you a commission for direct product sales, plus the opportunity to recruit or sponsor other business builders on your team where you can then earn a tiny commission when purchase, consume or sell products and services.

Fortunes have been made in the network marketing arena and it works. But it takes time and “the secret”  In spite of what many newbie network marketers might tell you, you will not “get rich” overnight.  In fact, most network marketers don’t make any money at all.  But Network marketing is a Get Rich slowly  ( as in 5-10  years ) of consistent work and execution.  It all boils down to being able to consistently introduce the business to new prospects on a consistent basis over an extended period of time. Think leads, more leads, and even more leads. Figure 3-5 years of constantly promoting your new MLM business to hit a solid six-figure income on the low end and 7-10 years of effort on the high end.

Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet marketing methods to some degree, because affiliates often use regular advertising methods. Those methods include organic search engine optimization (SEO), paid search engine marketing (PPC, Pay Per Click), e-mail marketing, content marketing and in some sense display advertising.   2. In most cases, the Affiliate program has done most of the work for you.
    • a. They have created the products
    • Built and tested the sales funnels
    • They handle all customer-related issues.
  3. As a newbie, all you have to do is master traffic generation, and send that traffic to the offer.
  4. The skills that you develop in building your Affiliate marketing business are required for every other business model mentioned.  So once you have mastered, traffic generation, building your own sales funnels, and conversion, those skills make building all of the other previously mentioned businesses easier!  But you don’t have to be good at any of those skills except traffic generation to get started in affiliate marketing.
  5. If you don’t have a budget for paid advertisements, you can start driving traffic with free sources like video marketing with Youtube, SEO and even Facebook and Twitter marketing.

Now some people will tell you that affiliate marketing is easy.  But I’m gonna be frank…  If you are looking for some overnight success system that pours money into your bank account without you having to do any work, then you might as well get used to the idea of punching the clock at your nine-to-five for the rest of your life, because no such system exists.

Market Research

Before you prove a product to promote, you have to choose a niche and do research on your target market.  The most important part of your marketing efforts is to determine who your target market is and how you can best serve them.   This means that you have to gain an understanding of their wants and desires. You must come to know what makes them tick… What are they afraid of, what makes them angry, what keeps them up at night.

You must come to know your target market so well, that when you speak to them, they feel as though you are reading their minds.

Proven Affiliate Marketing Tactics

Once you have determined your niche and your target market and you have an understanding of how to best serve them, then you can start looking for products that you can promote.

Most newbie internet marketers enter the industry with great expectations of quick overnight riches.  And most never make a single dime online.  If you are new to the digital marketing world and really want to be successful, then make sure that you are not committing one of these 3  deadly mistakes that will kill your bank account and your ability to make money online

#1.  The Shiny Object syndrome

There are so many push-button success formulas out there, that it’s easy for newbies to get distracted.  There are all types of products available out there that will teach you the next hottest thing to “online riches”.  And the truth of it is that most of them actually work.   The challenge is making them work for you!

Trust me, I’ve been there, done that. I’ve probably tried them all, and I’ve actually made some money at most of them.  But I never achieved the level of success that I wanted until I decided to focus on one business model and “JUST SAY NO!” to any other business opportunity that came my way.  For those of us in the industry, business opportunities are like crack!

The one thing that will determine your success in this industry, is the ability to make a decision on one income-producing method, focus on it, and master it!

#2.  Expecting Instant Results

I truly believe that 99% of the online opportunities that you find on the internet will produce results for you if you stay focused and put in the work.  But most people are looking for “overnight riches!”  And there are tons of shady snake oil salesmen who will gladly sell you their “instant riches” internet business in a box.  I’m not telling you that you can’t make a lot of money online,  because you can.  But the money won’t come until AFTER you have developed your knowledge and skills and have provided service to enough people.  Money is a result of serving people… And if you want a lot of money, you have to serve a lot of people!

Steven Covey speaks of the “Law of the Farm”.  WHere you must plant the seed, nurture it, water the plant, pull weeds, and then after putting in the work, then and only then when the plant matures and bears fruit, can you reap the benefits.  You can’t eat the fruit and then do the work.  This thinking is all wrong!

#3  Not Taking Responsibility

One of the things that I see a lot in this business is people saying, “Well that system doesn’t work!”  When the truth of it is that there are thousands of people who are earning money using the same system.  The problem is that “They didn’t work the system”.  Affiliate marketing is a multi-million dollar business, and like any other business there is a good deal of work involved to create success.  If you are not willing to put in the work, then you will not see any results!

The attention spans of the average internet surfers is very very short!  So, to keep the attention of your readers,  break your content into short, meaningful paragraphs and use proper headlines and sub-headlines.

No Calls to Action

What is the purpose of your site?  Is it  Lead generation? Direct Sales?  Regardless of the purpose of your site and your content,  make sure that you drive your site visitors to the next action byYour Authority Website placing appropriate Calls to Action buttons and phrases.  People need to be told what to do next… So make sure that you tell them by having good calls to action throughout your site and content.

I was overwhelmed and didn’t have a strategic plan in place. I was just chasing after money without really knowing what I was doing. And guess what? I wasn’t making any money.

It took me a while, but I finally realized that I needed to focus and be strategic. I had to stop chasing every shiny object and start following a set of rules that would guide my efforts. Once I did that, things started to change. I went from struggling to make a few bucks online to becoming a top earner in my affiliate marketing business. Now, I want to share these rules with you so you can avoid the mistakes I made and start seeing real results in your business.

Rule 1: Become a Strategic Entrepreneur

The first rule is to become a strategic entrepreneur. If you’re feeling overwhelmed right now—like you’ve been buying course after course and following everyone on the internet without getting the results you want—it’s time for an information detox. Stop trying to do everything at once and start focusing on what really matters.

When I first started, I didn’t have a clear plan. I was just hoping and dreaming that I would make money. But here’s the thing: money is a result of helping people. If you want to make a lot of money, you need to help a lot of people solve their problems. That’s where being strategic comes in. Instead of just chasing after money, focus on how you can provide value and make a difference in people’s lives. When you do that, the money will follow.

Rule 2: Eliminate FOMO (Fear of Missing Out)

Next up is eliminating FOMO, or the Fear of Missing Out. I can’t tell you how much time and money I wasted because I was always afraid of missing out on the next big thing. I was jumping from one business model to the next—network marketing, e-commerce, forex, binary options—you name it, I tried it.

But everything changed when I realized that I needed to pick one business model and stick with it. I had to stop following every guru and chasing every shiny object that came my way. Instead, I focused on one thing and gave it my all. And that’s when I started seeing results. So, if you’re like I was, always worried about missing out, take a deep breath and commit to one path. You’ll be amazed at what you can achieve when you focus.

Rule 3: Consume Only What You Plan to Use

One of the biggest reasons people fail in online marketing is because they’re consuming too much information. They feel like they need to be on every platform—Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok, YouTube—you name it. But here’s the thing: you don’t need to do it all.

Instead, consume information that you’re actually going to use. If you’re not planning to do Facebook advertising, don’t buy a Facebook marketing course. Information overload is real, and it can keep you stuck. So, rather than trying to follow every trend, focus on the information that will help you achieve your specific goals. This way, you can avoid getting overwhelmed and actually start making progress.

Rule 4: Follow a Strategic Plan

As you start building your online presence, it’s important to have a strategic plan in place. You should always be asking yourself how each of your efforts is helping you move closer to your business goals. Write down your goals—make sure they’re SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound)—and track your progress regularly.

At least once a month, take some time to review what you’ve been doing and see if it’s moving you in the right direction. We’ve all been there at one point or another, where you start to feel drained and dissatisfied with your daily existence. There’s so much going on, so many projects and tasks that need to be completed, so much progress you could be making, and there are issues at home… Just the perfect storm of stressful topics to make you feel small and inadequate. You have to learn to “take or leave it” when it comes to asking for the business

That’s not to say that you should act flippant or not care about people. You should absolutely care about them. Instead, you need develop a little aloofness. You need to come from a posture of “divine indifference.”

“I need people for my business, but I don’t need this particular person for my business.”

When you adopt that kind of an attitude, you won’t come off as needy, clingy, or desperate to your prospects, which makes you more attractive. There’s a saying that goes something like this:

“He who cares the least holds the most power.”

It’s not about being flippant or uncaring, though. Rather it’s about being realistic.

“If this person doesn’t join, I know there are lots of other fish in the ocean. I’m not addicted to this one person’s decision. If they say ‘no,’ my world won’t end. My life will go on. I’m won’t weep and moan and follow up with them forever. I refuse to position myself as needy and clingy.”

Next up, and importantly, attractive people don’t operate with a hidden agenda. We probably all know somebody in our lives with a hidden agenda. Every time they do something nice for you, they expect reciprocation. They’re not doing the nice thing just because it’s nice. They’re doing it because they want – and expect – something in return. They might give you a gift, but they’re hoping you’ll post pictures and thank them on social media and say…

“Oh, you’re so wonderful. Thank you for this awesome present.”

…giving them public recognition so they look good.

Now, I know that people have different attitudes as far as personal development and mindset goes, but my advice here is pretty practical.

First, you must become comfortable with the unknown.

If you’ve never done any online marketing, the first thing that you’ve got to understand is that you do not have to learn everything that you need at once.  It will take some time to get your head around the different aspects of online marketing and you have to realize that you are building a new skill set that will serve you in many ways.

You shouldn’t try to learn everything at once, just focus on what’s in front of you.  For instance, there are several social media platforms that you can use to help you find customers and team members – each platform has its own particular features and idiosyncrasies.  So instead of trying to learn Facebook Marketing and Twitter Marketing and Instagram Marketing and SnapChat Marketing, pick the one platform that you like the most, focus on that one platform until you have mastered it to the point where you are consistently generating 10-20 leads a day.  And then and only then should you even consider learning how to market on another social media platform.

There are always going to be new technology that you don’t know about, and new skills that you will need to acquire.

Just keep that in mind and expect the unknown.

You must also learn how to overcome adversity.

As you progress in your internet network marketing endeavors, you will undoubtedly encounter obstacles and might even suffer a setback here and there.  The key though is to never, ever give up.   If you are the type of person that gives up when you encounter roadblocks then don’t even try to build a network marketing business, because I can tell you, in spite of what your upline or the gurus tell you, you will run into them.

You must respect the new skills that you are learning.

When you encounter things that you don’t understand, don’t give up… Get resourceful!

Remember, it’s not important that you know all the answers, what’s important is that you know how to find the answers to the important questions.

The last thing as far as your mindset is concerned is that you have to overcome peer pressure.

There will always be haters.  There will be friends and family that will criticise you for pursuing your dreams, and there will be people in your company who don’t approve of you doing something different from what they recommend.

It’s normal for people who have not built their business using the internet to have a negative attitude about those who are doing so.

It’s natural for people to fear what they don’t understand, and many times, when people fear something, they go on the offensive and start attacking those who are doing something “different”.

Building a business online is a bit different than building it offline.

THere are different tactics and strategies and requires an entirely different skill set.

If a leader in your company has doubts and fears about your online efforts, respect the leader, but don’t give in to their doubt and fears.

Though your leaders may not have used the internet to build their own businesses, there are tons of people around the world who have built teams of 1000’s of people using it.

And remember, this is YOUR business.  You don’t need the approval of anyone else.  You get to build it in the fashion that you choose.

  • Partner with someone who already has a product that you can market.

Paid traffic is traffic that you actually pay a site for.  This can be in the form of Facebook ads, Bing or google ads, solo ads, and banner ads.

The advantage of “free” traffic is that basically,  you can generate this type of traffic without spending money.  However, as they say, nothing is free and the same is true for free traffic.  Though you may not spend money to generate free traffic, you will at the very least spend your time either by manually making posts on social media sites or by creating good content that is optimized for the search engines.

Regardless of which route you go, Free or paid… You should master ONE method of traffic so that you can consistently generate enough traffic to your site to actually have people see your content and offers.

Only after you have mastered one, and are consistently generating traffic through that source of traffic, then and only then should you attempt to add a second traffic source. Keep in mind that you only need one reliable traffic source to build your business.

 

Pillar #3 – Conversions

Once you’ve mastered at least one traffic source and are reliably generating traffic, you now have to get that traffic to convert.  Generally speaking, people will watch you for a while before they purchase anything, so your first conversion is to get them to opt into your list.  This is probably the most important step… Because basically, your list is your business. The industry stats say that for every 1 person that is on your list, you will generate $1 of income.  So your first task is to convert your site visitors into fans of yours and get them on your list.  You can accomplish this by offering something that is of high perceived value, for free.  This can be a free eBook, a free video course, a free coaching session, whatever. Whatever it is, it must have real value in the market place and you must give it away for free! Well, not totally for free, you want to trade your valuable asset for their email address. Secondly, you must actually convert your traffic into actual sales.  Again, because people don’t know you when they first visit your site, they are, generally speaking, not going to buy from you.  You have to build a relationship with your list.  Become an authority figure – an expert that they turn to for answers and then after they have grown to know, like and trust you… Then they will buy from you.

 

Pillar #4 Technical

Because your online store is…   well, online, there are some technical aspects that you will have to have covered.  This doesn’t mean that you have to become a web designer or computer programmer.  It just means that if you don’t have the technical skills required to maintain your online business, you either have to…

  • Learn to do it yourself
  • Contract out the work or
  • Partner with someone who can do the work for you.

One of the most important lessons that I’ve learned about business building is to ask “Who?” not “How?”. If there is a task that you need to have done and you don’t know how to do it, ask yourself instead, “WHO can do this for me?” These days, there are tons of resources available online. There are web designers, copywriters, and people with highly technical skills on sites like fiverr.com or upwork. So instead of getting stuck on “How” to get something done, ask yourself “Who can I get to do this for me?”

So, those are the 4 pillars.  Once you get all four of these pillars in place and functioning in your online business, there are no limits to which your business can grow.
