How To Have More Energy With less Sleep
People ask me all the time…
“Matt! How do you have so much energy all the time?!”
As you know if you’ve been following me for a while, I travel…
A lot!
I was in 27 different countries last year alone.
Right now I’m on a trip to Mexico for leadership training and I’m not getting a lot of sleep…
…But I have a ton of energy and feel phenomenal.
Why?
Because of something someone told me a few years ago that changed my paradigm…
Change your paradigm about sleep
The person said, “If you’ve got a certain amount of time to sleep and you’re not going to have a chance to work out during the day…
You have a choice to either:
- Sleep the full 6 hours (or however much sleep you have scheduled) or
- Wake up 30 minutes – 1 hour early and workout.”
He said, “If you have the choice to either do cardio or sleep an extra 30 minutes, always choose cardio.”
Now I knew this before because I had studied the body, fitness, and sleep but it took me a while to implement it.
Now, why does this make sense?
Over time – and it doesn’t take a lot of time – but over a short period of time…
If you will train your cardiovascular system…
doing cardio or high-intensity training…
You’ll train your heart-rate to operate at having a lower resting heart rate.
When this happens…
Throughout the day, you’ve got a lower resting heart rate.
Your heart’s beating less so it’s requiring less energy and you’ll require less sleep.
When I heard this I’m like, “man! That makes so much sense!”
Doing it is another thing…
Increasing your energy with less sleep requires discipline
Setting your alarm to wake up 30 minutes or an hour early to go work out requires discipline.
On this trip today I knew I was going to have breakfast with my team and so I was faced with a choice…
Wake up an hour early and get an hour less sleep while I’m on the road…
When I feel like I need it the most…
OR
Sleep an hour longer.
I woke up an hour early and I did 45-minutes of cardio and I’m absolutely on fire!
Not only is this habit getting me in better shape…
But it’s also burning fat, requiring less sleep because I’ve got a lower resting heart rate, and giving me more energy!
Do this consistently.
Make it a habit!
Do work…
Do the cardio consistently…
And watch yourself feel on fire!
